Odontocidium Susan Kaufman

Hybrid: Odontocidium Wera Stolze x Oncidium flexosum. There is also a reddish Cultivar. Thus, ours should be the 'Butterfly' one.

It is a small and attractive plant which grows fast in the right conditions. Petals and sepals are yellow with chestnut mahogany markings. The brilliant yellow labellum shows small dots of the same color.

Bought with the spike and flowers after the course in June 2012 at the "Orchideria" by Pozzi in Morosolo.

Temperature: intermediate, meaning 15-20 degC minimum at night during winter
Light: Like all other hybrids involving the genera Odontoglossum and Oncidium, it is difficult to say: some website reports low to medium light (1000-2000 foot-candles). Some other website suggests a very bright spot like for Cattleya (2500-4000 foot-candles), with some direct sunlight in the early morning and/or late evening
Humidity: ideal is 50-80%
Rest: no
Repot: every 3 years when vase soil is exhausted
Scent: no

The Odontocidium hybrid is growing and now going outside on the balcony together with all intermediate-temperature orchids. We decide to set it on the bottom tray, first row, in a very bright spot with some direct sunlight in the late evening.

The Cocciniglia invasion is only a memory. Many new pseudobulbs are developing. I count as many as five new small pseudobulbs :) !

Arghhhhh! There are white dots on this plant. We are guessing it is Cocciniglia! We will spray a specific product even within the rooting system and repot. Well the first pest case... We have no other fingers to cross :( .

After less than one month, flowers are falling :( !
