Burrageara Stephan Isler

Burragearas are intergeneric hybrids containing four different orchid genera: Cochlioda x Miltonia x Odontoglossum x Oncidium. The Burrageara Stephan Isler is the result of Vuylstekeara Edna x Oncidium leucochilum.

This specific plant has deep red flowers which usually originate from tall spikes. The labellum is peculiar, with orange sunset tones.

Bought with two spikes, blooms and flowers after the course in June 2012 at the "Orchideria" by Pozzi in Morosolo.

Temperature: intermediate, meaning 15-20 degC minimum at night during winter. Warmer temperatures above 25 degC can be even dangerous for the plant. Important is the diurnal temperature difference of about 5 degC, especially for blooming.
Light: like in Colmanaras and Odontocidium, it is difficult to say: some website reports low to medium light (1000-2000 foot-candles). Some other website suggests a bright spot (2500 foot-candles), with some direct sunlight in the early morning and/or late evening.
Humidity: ideal range is 50-60%
Rest: no
Repot: every 2-3 years, when the roots are outgrowing the pot and the soil is going to break down
Scent: no

The small pseudobuld is growing and now going outside on the balcony together with all intermediate-temperature orchids. We decide to set it on the bottom tray, second row, in a bright spot but shaded by our larger Laeliocattleya Miva Royal Chocolate 'Delice'. No direct sunlight at the moment.

Nice! One part of the plant is not giving up: we have a new pseudobulb with new roots. However the other parts look rotten. We have removed them and repotted the pseudobulb as shown above. Fingers crossed!

Unfortunately I think we have watered the plant too much during winter. Some leaves are becoming yellow. We have examined the rooting system and most of the roots are black and rotten. We are going to clean and repot the plant. The usual newbie mistake: too much water! We will make sure not to repeat the error for the similar Burrageara Nelly Isler

After almost two months, flowers are falling. I guess they have lasted enough time!
